I was born and raised to do this work, and called to teach it
I'm Jezmina Von Thiele, author, fortune teller, and cultural educator. I teach divination not only as a spiritual practice, but also as a Romani cultural tradition and as my family’s survival trade. I co-authored Secrets of Romani Fortune Telling (2024), Secrets of Romani Tarot (2027), and the Romanistan Tarot deck and guidebook (2028) with my collaborator Paulina Stevens. Together we co-host Romanistan, a podcast and archive of Romani life and culture. I hold a Trauma-Informed Facilitation Certificate from the Justice Resource Institute because ethical divination work has to hold both the mystical and the material, both spirit and safety.
Roma, more commonly known by the slur/misnomer "G*psies," are a diasporic ethnic group originally from India. Historically nomadic due to persecution, multiple genocides, and over 500 years of slavery, Roma still face world-wide oppression today. Because of this ongoing marginalization, Roma have created survival trades, like metal working, performing, animal trading, and fortune telling (professional divination).
Roma are also, unmistakably, the people most associated with the fortune-telling imagery that saturates Western pop culture: the tarot reader, the palm reader, the woman with the crystal ball and the headscarf. That imagery has been mocked, exoticized, commercialized, and stripped of its roots by people who have no relationship to the culture it came from. Divination is not a Halloween costume or a lifestyle choice. It is community care, spiritual practice, a survival trade, a business, and a sacred act. If you're going to do this work, you deserve to understand where it comes from, so you can practice it with reverence and integrity. This apprenticeship operates on an ethical lineage framework, and this perspective is woven throughout every workshop, call, and conversation inside Ambitious Witches.

In honor of the lineage of survival trade fortune telling, 2% of all Ambitious Witches proceeds go directly to E-Romnja, a Romani-run feminist organization. Founded in 2012 by Romani activist Carmen Gheorghe, E-Romnja is the first Roma feminist organization of its kind, working on the ground with hundreds of Romani women across multiple communities to build civic participation, confront gender-based violence, expand access to sexual and reproductive health resources, and push for the housing, infrastructure, and policy changes that Romani women have been denied for generations.
